The Barker College Middle School

As the Head of Middle School at Barker College it is a ‘pleasure’ to be able to introduce you to some aspects of our Middle School programme. Barker has been educating boys for 112 years. We understand the need to provide a challenging, inclusive and enjoyable learning environment for boys. It is a learning environment where there are lots of things for boys to do.
Middle School boys learn to try their hardest in everything they undertake. This includes their academic application, participation in compulsory Saturday sport, an involvement in the range of academic extension opportunities, the vibrant music program as well as adventure and outdoor activities. We endeavour to appropriately acknowledge and celebrate effort by all our boys. It is a wonderful environment where learning is taken seriously and greatly encouraged.
The Middle School comprises eight Houses. The House is the key point of connection with Barker College for each Middle School boy. The Head of House and House Associates are all members of staff with responsibility for providing pastoral and academic care for the Middle School boys. The Head of House is the first point of contact for parents, staff and boys regarding a boy’s welfare at Barker. Boys remain in the same House throughout their time in the Middle School.
The philosophy of the Middle School is for each boy to:
- participate;
- feel valued;
- be challenged;
- be guided in Christian, social, physical and academic development;
- develop lasting, realistic and positive views of themselves; and
- demonstrate a clear understanding their responsibilities to others through service, support and kind actions.
The “middle years” of schooling are an important stage in a young man’s development. This is something we take seriously at Barker as we strive to prepare the boys who enter Year 7 to be more like young men when they move on from the Middle School at the end of Year 9.
