Co-curricular

The students of the Junior School enjoy a rich, wide and varied co-curricular programme. We believe that each student should be encouraged to take full advantage of the full range of co-curricula activities that are on offer in the Junior School. Through our academic curriculum and specialist programmes, together with our co-curricular programmes, we aim to develop the whole child: the academic, the social, the physical and the spiritual.

Co-curricular activities available for our students to experience include:

  • Music
  • Sport
  • Chess
  • Debating
  • Crusaders
  • Specialist Coaching Programmes
  • Special Events

All our students take part in games and sports throughout the week, and also on a Saturday morning, where we play in teams for which each student is selected. Athletics, swimming, rugby, soccer, cricket, tennis, basketball and softball are our main sports. We play against other schools during each semester’s competition as well as in our internal House competitions.

The McCaskill Music Centre, opened in 1987 and again renovated and extended in 2005, offers excellent music facilities for students throughout the whole school. Brass bands, concert bands, orchestras, guitar ensembles, quartets and choirs are some of the activities on offer for our students. A strings instruction programme operates for all boys in Year 3. A woodwind, brass and strings instruction programme operates for all boys in Year 5. Private tuition is available from fully qualified staff on all woodwind, brass, string, keyboard and percussion instruments.

Chess is a traditional activity that occurs in the Junior School with strong House and inter-school competition. Chess coaching is available throughout the year. All boys have opportunity to be involved in House debating. Two inter-school competitions are also available, the ISDA competition and the JSHAA competition.

Crusaders is an important Christian activity of fellowship and has remained very popular in the history of the Junior School.

Coupled with the myriad of other activities available in the Junior School, there is something on offer for each of our students. We encourage all our students to participate in as many activities as they can comfortably manage, experiencing as many opportunities as possible.
