Curriculum
Barker College Junior School offers a wide and varied experience of learning that has been designed and tailored for the specific needs of boys. Our model of teaching and learning has at its hub, from which all our curriculum is developed, the tenets of integration and differentiation. The Junior School curriculum follows the broad direction set by the New South Wales Board of Studies within the following Key Learning Areas:
- English;
- Mathematics;
- Science and Technology;
- Human Society and Its Environment;
- Creative and Practical Arts; and
- Person Development, Health and Physical Education
At Barker we understand that students learn at different rates and possess varying levels of abilities in a range of areas. We believe that these different rates of learning and levels of ability, together with an appreciation of the importance of the social and emotional needs of our students, are best served by delivering the curriculum within twelve parallel classes:
- Two Year 3 classes;
- Two Year 4 classes;
- Four Year 5 classes; and
- Four Year 6 classes
Junior School lessons begin at 8.25am and conclude at 3.00pm. Throughout each day, the students of the Junior School have the support of many specialist teachers, including learning support teachers in Literacy and Numeracy for those students who are experiencing difficulties. The students also have the benefit of an Enrichment Co-ordinator who is able to design programmes for those students who require and who would benefit from these special differentiated programmes.
The main student enrolment points in the Junior School are at the beginning of Year 3 and again at the beginning of Year 5.
