Welcome

Sharon Humphreys

Geography at Barker provides an opportunity to participate in active learning, both in and outside the classroom. The Geography program encourages students to explore their world at the local scale, and also to investigate communities and environments at the global scale. The emphasis is to provide creative and interesting learning experiences that will engage students in higher-order thinking. This will motivate them to understand the geographic processes which form and transform their world. Geography challenges students to create a better world that ensures social justice, equity and a more ecologically sustainable future.

Learning in Geography Labs

Barker Geography is equipped with the latest information technology in the classroom. Each lab is resourced to provide students with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and contemporary CD Rom materials. The classroom is a door to a virtual world. Place and space are within easy reach with the provision of on-line atlases, the world wide web on desktop computers, and IT equipped teaching consoles. Students can understand how amazing the world is and can develop a greater awareness of global issues and events.

Learning in the Field

Barker runs one of the largest fieldwork programs in Australia. All students participate in learning activities that allow them to investigate geographic processes and phenomena. Gathering data in the field and then synthesizing the results is an integral part of the learning experience. Fieldwork is conducted in authentic learning environments with access to the latest in fieldwork equipment and the opportunities to learn from vocational geographers.

Geography students at Barker recognise their ability to shape their world by informed decision making and that they can promote positive actions to create a better future. The Geography team at Barker strive to ensure that the learning journey is a relevant and enriched one.

We look forward to working with you,
