1. What can Barker College offer my child?
Barker College offers a predominantly academically orientated programme and a very broad range of co-curricular activities, which complement the academic programme. The vast majority of Senior School students proceed to university or other tertiary study on graduation. There are few opportunities in the Senior School curriculum for students whose aspirations are otherwise directed.
2. What type of student is Barker trying to attract?
The School seeks to enrol young people who, in the opinion of the School’s senior staff, will gain maximum benefit from the academic programme Barker offers; who are willing to contribute to the life of the School by participating as fully as possible in the range of activities available; and whose families both understand and are supportive of the Christian aims of the school. Parents should study the Prospectus carefully to understand the School’s objectives, and to assess whether Barker can offer what they are seeking.
3. What are your intake years
Boys are normally enrolled to enter Barker College in Year 3, Year 5 or Year 7. Girls are accepted into Year 10. At that level, entry for boys is limited, and subject to availability of places. The School is willing to consider applications for entry to other years, but only if places are available. Only rarely do vacancies occur in years other than Years 3, 5, 7 and 10.
4. Are places available now?
For the latest information on the availability of places at Barker, please contact the Enrolment office on (02) 98478207 or email elizabeth_harrison@barker.nsw.edu.au.
5. Are any students given priority for entry?
The College reserves the right to offer preferred placement to siblings of students already attending the School, to children whose fathers, mothers and/or grandfathers have attended the School, and to children whose families can demonstrate an active involvement in a Christian congregation.
6. What priority do children of ex-students get?
Children of former students for whom an application is received prior to their second birthday will automatically be invited to attend an interview and will be considered before any other applicant is offered a place in a particular year. If children of former students are not registered before their second birthday they will not automatically be granted an interview. The School Council policy requires children of former students to complete all normal enrolment formalities. They complete the Student Questionnaire, sit the entry test and attend an interview at the School with their parents.
7. Can priority status be lost?
If a child with ex-student or sibling priority completes the entry selection procedure, i.e. attends the testing and interview and is subsequently offered a place, then the offer and priority status applies only to that year of entry. If entry is delayed, priority status is lost only to that year of entry and the student will not necessarily be guaranteed an interview or place, even if siblings are currently in the School.
8. Is the Barker enrolment policy subject to change?
All organisations, from time to time, initiate policy changes reflecting the needs of the organisation and their clientele at a particular time. At Barker policy changes are implemented by the School Council. The School Council reserves the right to alter its enrolment policy to suit prevailing circumstances. At any time parents are invited to contact the Enrolments Office to ask if policy has changed.
9. How are students selected for entry?
Approximately twelve to eighteen months prior to entry,
students are required to complete a questionnaire provided
by the School. The School requests a family reference,
and two school reports need to be provided. This information
provides a ‘picture’ of the student’s attainments, interests
and character.
All applicants are tested by Barker. Tests cover literacy,
numeracy, reasoning and general ability. Results from
the tests and the other information received enable the
School to select students who are to proceed to an interview
at the School. The School does not discuss the results
of tests with parents. Even students who are interviewed
are not necessarily offered a place. Only some students
are selected to receive a definite offer of a place.
At the same time a short waiting list is drawn up. This
is used in the event of some students not accepting their
offers, or withdrawal by current students.
All girl applicants for entry into Year 10 will be invited
to complete a questionnaire, and to send copies of their
two most recent school reports, and they will be invited
to attend an interview. This usually happens during May
of the year before entry. The offer of a place is made
by the end of June, in the year prior to entry.
10. Do you accept students who are not Anglican?
Barker College is an Anglican School that welcomes students from a variety of Christian denominations and other faith traditions. As part of their education in a Christian environment, however, all students attend Chapel and Christian Studies classes each week. Participation in Christian worship enables our students to share in a corporate statement of Christian faith that is real and relevant to the lives of young people today.
11. Can I transfer my desired entry to another year?
Request for a change of entry point and entry year must be notified to the Enrolments Office in writing or by email. It should especially be noted that if a student is offered a definite place in a year and later the parent desires to postpone to a later date (e.g. offered Year 3 then decide to delay to Year 5) the ‘definite’ offer is not transferable. The student would revert to the normal waiting list and be considered with the Year 5 cohort two years later.
12. Barker is a large school – will my child get lost?
Care of students is the first priority at Barker and underpins all the teaching and learning principles. Pastoral care is a primary concern of every member of staff at Barker. Barker is structured in three separate Schools, each managed by a Head of School. In the Junior School teachers work with the Head of School, specialist teachers, and counsellors to ensure students are known and cared for. The Class teacher is responsible for each boy’s academic and general progress.
Each boy in Years 7-9 is in a House Group under the care of a Head of House who is responsible for the academic progress, welfare and well-being of the boys in the House and who is the first point of communication with parents.
The academic progress and personal development of each student in the Senior School is the responsibility of a Tutor who provides a link between home and School and who monitors academic progress as well as individual student welfare, functioning very much in the role of a mentor.
The intensive pastoral care arrangements ensure that no student is overlooked in any respect.
13. How big are the classes?
Class sizes are usually restricted to 24 in Years 3 and 4, 26 in Years 5 to 8 and 23 maximum in the Senior School. Classes such as drama have a maximum of 15 students, while Visual Arts and Design and Technology classes have a maximum of 18 students.
14. Do you have boarding facilities?
Boarding has always been an integral part of Barker and is available to boys and girls from Years 10 to Year 12. A strong emphasis is placed on family-style pastoral care in community living. Boarders’ daily activities are under the supervision of experienced residential staff, almost all of whom are members of the Barker teaching staff.
15. How do students travel to school?
Barker is located within easy walking distance from both Hornsby and Waitara railway stations and there are also local bus companies in the area which serve the school.
16. How much is the enrolment registration fee?
The enrolment registration fee of $300 (inclusive of GST) is non-refundable and is due on lodgement of the application form. The student’s name will be registered on a waiting list.
17. What is the Admission fee?
When a place is offered, all parents are required to pay a non-refundable Student Admission fee. For each student this sum is payable as a single payment prior to the student entering the School. For entry in 2007 the Student Admission Fee will be $4000 for all grades to Year 10 which includes full OBA (Old Barker Association) Life Membership Subscription. The fee from Year 10 is $2800.
18. Can I pay with my credit card?
The Enrolment Application fee, Admission fee and tuition fees can all be paid using credit cards. Visa, Master card and Bankcard are acceptable. We do not accept American Express or Diners Club cards. You can also pay the Admission Fee and Tuition fees by BPAY.
19. Are there tours of the school?
Yes, during Terms 2, 3 & 4. All visitors must register therefore it is important that you ring and book on a tour. Tour dates and booking telephone phone numbers can be found on the Coming Events screen of this site.
