University Flexible Entry and Bonus Point Schemes and Student Decisions Regarding Course Selection - Whilst every care has been taken in gathering and providing this information, due to the differences in the way these schemes and programmes are applied, students wishing to use these programmes and schemes must check details with the individual universities.
Barker strongly advocates the following three criteria as the best for a student to use when selecting an HSC or university course:
- Does the course interest me?
- Do I enjoy the course?
- Will the course be something I need or put me on the path to where I want to be?
If a student wishes to see the potential impact of university flexible entry and bonus point schemes, information about those schemes for which Barker students are eligible can be found at:
Many universities use flexible entry and bonus point schemes. These schemes are used to determine the enrolment of students into university courses despite the fact that the student’s UAI falls below the published cut-off. Bonus point and flexible entry schemes have existed for some time in various forms. Regional universities, for example, will offer students bonus points if they come from schools within their catchment area. It is important to note, however, that there is no consistency in how these schemes are applied from one university to the next. While some schemes are applied automatically to student results, there are others that require an application to the university faculty concerned. Another example of the inconsistency between universities is some institutions apply a maximum of 4 bonus points while others apply as much as 10 bonus points. It is advised that a university flexible entry and bonus point scheme should not be a factor when making decisions about HSC or university courses.
