Unless admitted to a university course as a Fee-paying student, students are required to contribute to the cost of their university education as a Commonwealth-supported student (CSP place).
Under the Australian Government's Higher Education Reforms, universities now determine their own student contribution level for each band of study within ranges set by the Australian Government from $0 to a maximum of 25% higher than the estimated student contribution rate for that year.
The estimated student contributions that Commonwealth supported students will be required to pay in 2008:
- NATIONAL PRIORITIES (education, nursing): Up to $4077
- BAND 1 (humanities, behavioural science, social studies, foreign languages, visual and performing arts): $Up to $5095
- BAND 2 ( mathematics, statistics, computing, built environment, health, engineering, science, surveying, agriculture): Up to $7260
- BAND 3 (law, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, accounting, commerce, administration, economics,): Up to $8499
Each semester most students will have a choice of either paying their student contributions up front or Australian citizens may request a HECS-HELP (Higher Education Loan Programme) loan and repay the loan later through the taxation system.

Fee-paying students
The Commonwealth Government allows tertiary education institutions to offer fee-paying places to Australian students that are additional to those funded by the government (DFEE place). Do not assume that you can enrol as a fee-paying student, then transfer to a Commonwealth-supported place at a subsequent time.
Not all universities will offer Full-fee places in 2008.
For information on which universities will offer Full-fee places and on the contributions required from Commonwealth-supported students, refer to specific university websites (see our "Universities" page for links).
Detailed information about university costs are available in the 2008 UAC Guide distributed to Barker students in early August.
