Under the Australian Government's Higher Education Reforms, universities now determine their own student contribution level for each band of study within ranges set by the Australian Government .
Listed below are the range of student contributions for 2009 admissions; these amounts are indexed each year. Amounts are based on a full year of full-time study:
- NATIONAL PRIORITIES (education, nursing, mathematics, science, statistics): Up to $4162
- BAND 1 (humanities, arts, behavioural science, social studies, foreign languages, visual and performing arts): $Up to $5201
- BAND 2 (computing, built environment, health, engineering, surveying, agriculture): Up to $7412
- BAND 3 (law, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, accounting, commerce, administration, economics, commerce): Up to $8677
Note that from 1 January 2010 the maximum annual student contributin for education and nursing studies will be inceased from the "National Priority" rate to the Band 1 rate.
Each semester most students will have a choice of either paying their student contributions up front or Australian citizens may request a HECS-HELP (Higher Education Loan Programme) loan and repay the loan later through the taxation system.
