This is intended as a guide for students in the Senior School who wish to prepare a resume. Listed below are suggested headings for your resume: you need to organise relevant information under these headings. Your resume should be a maximum of two A4 pages.
Personal Details:
Including your name, contact details and age.
Education:
School Certificate: the school you attended, the year you sat the examination and your results
HSC: the subjects and levels you will be sitting
Academic Awards: any significant awards gained during the last three years
Work Experience:
Part-time job(s)
School-based work experience program
Give dates and employment details for both, if applicable
Skills:
Give details of any transferable skills you possess, for example, fluency in another language, computer software you are able to use, cash register experience, driver's licence.
Interests:
You might like to provide sub-headings like sport, music, performing arts, visual arts and so on. Provide details of interests outside school as well as extra-curricular activities at school.
Strengths:
You may feel a little self-conscious listing these - don't be. The most important thing is that you can justify in an interview what you list here as strengths. Similarly, be prepared to speak about your weaknesses in an interview, but do not list these in your resume.
Examples of strengths might include: leadership ability, adaptability, self-reliance, ability to work as part of a team
Referees:
The names and contact details of two referees. Typically, one might be an adult family friend who has known you a long time and the other might be an employer or perhaps your Tutor.
Usually an employer will contact a referee by telephone.
Make sure that you ask the person before nominating him/her as a referee.
