TAFE-DELIVERED VOCATIONAL EDUCATION (TVET)

TAFE delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is based on a formal arrangement between Secondary Schools and TAFE in NSW. Students going into Years 11 and 12 can elect to study certain subjects from TAFE courses as part of their regular school study load.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are designed for the career and educational opportunities they provide. Students who successfully complete VET courses are entitled to two credentials: one from the NSW Board of Studies and one from TAFE.

Students study these courses at local TAFE colleges in classes made up of students from several schools in the area. Positions are very competitive. Classes at TAFE run in the afternoon and classes will be missed at school. In practice, Barker only allows students to study TAFE delivered VET Courses which are offered by Hornsby College of TAFE.

The Australian Association of Independent Schools (AIS) usually provides VET students from non-government schools with a funding subsidy, but there is a significant shortfall, and parents will be required to cover the cost of this shortfall. In the past, the shortfall ranged from between $300 to $1500, depending on the course being undertaken.

A student undertaking a TVET course is expected to catch up on work missed at school. In addition, students must organise time very carefully as TAFE is an "adult learning environment". TAFE teachers expect students to attend all classes and be punctual. Assignments and class work will have due dates, and warnings are not generally given. In addition students need to appreciate that the teaching styles of TAFE teachers are often different from those they are used to at school.

TAFE delivered VET Courses are co-ordinated at Barker through the Dean of External Programs, Mr Timothy Scott.
