The Need For The Appeal

The total projected cost of the new Building is $17.6 million.

The School Council will fund $15.5 million for the project from its cash reserves, and from increased borrowings. There is thus a shortfall of $2 million. Council has decided on this particular method of funding so that it can proceed with the building as expeditiously as possible. The Synod of the Anglican Church limits Council’s capacity to borrow, and Council will be borrowing to the limit of its approval to commence the building in 2007. The School has no non-core assets to dispose of to raise funds. Increasing fees is not an option because of the burden it places on a number of Barker families whose circumstances only with difficulty permit them to send their children to the school anyway, and the School’s annual giving programme, so generously supported by parents, cannot sustain a development programme of this dimension.

The School Council has therefore decided to implement, through the Barker Foundation Ltd, a capital-raising campaign with the immediate target of at least $2 million.

So committed is the School Council to proceeding that construction will begin before the end of 2007 as soon as Shire planning approval is obtained. But the Council’s capacity to complete the building rapidly, for the benefit of current Barker students, will depend on the School Community’s willingness to support this venture through voluntary gifts.

A special appeal such as this is the only way Council believes it can secure the sorts of opportunities it wishes to provide its young people, to give them the edge as they move into the adult world after they leave school.

DONATIONS
Your generous support for the Kurrajong Building Capital Appeal will have far-reaching results for Barker students both now and in the future. All donations are fully tax-deductible, and donations may be made over a four-year period.

The cost of your donation may be measured in financial terms, but the potential impact it has to touch the lives of Barker’s young people into the future is immeasurable.

For Barker is about its young people. It is for them that Council, staff and parents work so hard, to provide them with the opportunity to express their youthful enthusiasm, their idealism, and to serve their fellow men and women. Each brings to Barker a special gift. Barker’s task is so to foster and nurture that gift as to enable each boy and girl to be confident about using that gift for the benefit of their fellow men and women in the future. Barker’s young people go out into the world seeking honour, and not rewards, and these new facilities, supporting Barker’s innovative approach to teaching and learning, will ensure that they have the confidence, the belief in themselves, and above all, the critical skills base, truly to make a difference as they make their own way and their own future in the years ahead.
