Creative and Performing Arts Achievements

Impulse F1

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

The following students have been nominated for inclusion in Design Tech, the annual exhibition of Outstanding Design Projects developed by HSC Design and Technology students:

  • Stuart Blair
  • Amy Forbes
  • Rebecca Wilkes
  • Mia Harrison
  • Nicholas Woods

In addition two students were invited to exhibit their work on the New Inventors Program:

  • Clarke Hawke - adjustable bike frame
  • Jonathan Ward - Improved throttle design to impove enduro rider performance

The following four students won the Australian F1 in Schools' Championship in 2007. They went on to represent Australia and were placed 3rd in the 2008 World F1 in Schools' Championships:

  • Michael Heard, Matthew Cruikshank, Thomas Crookes and Alexander Womersley

DRAMA

  • Thomas Arkell has won the Sydney Theatre Company's Young Playwright Award for his HSC script! His script was also nominated for OnStage
  • Shaun Colnan’s major work in Drama has been retained by the Board for showcasing at OnStage, he wrote a Director's Folio for Stephen Sewell's incredible play, “Myth, Propaganda and Disaster in Nazi Germany and Contemporary America”
  • Sean Moore was nominated for inclusion in OnStage for his individual drama performance
  • Whilst the group of Sean Moore, David Arthur and Hamish Tait had their Group Performance nominated for OnStage
  • Congratulations to Sabryna Te'o who has been accepted into NIDA. This is rarely achieved by a student in their first post-school year
  • Ross Langley (Class of 2007) and Edmund Lembke-Hogan (Class of 2006) have also been accepted into NIDA

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY-VET

  • Nicholas Davies won the World Skills (Australia) Gold Medal in the IT Software Applications National Competition. He has now been named as a member of the “Skillaroos”, the Australian team to compete in the 2009 International World Skills Competition in Calgary, Canada. This is a truly remarkable achievement.

MUSIC

  • Alexander Openshaw’s composition Skewbald has been selected for Encore.
  • Thomas Arkell was also nominated for Encore for his practical performances.

In addition, Barker musicians had considerable success in the Sydney Performing Arts Challenge:

  • Alexander Openshaw - 1st place, Open Champion of Champions and Tenor Saxophone Solo
  • Timothy Shorten, - 2nd place Open Alto Saxophone Solo
  • Thomas Arkell - 2nd place Under 19 Clarinet Solo.
  • Alexander Glenny, Timothy Shorten, Alexander Openshaw - 1st Place Saxophone Ensemble

In addition at the Sydney Performing Arts Challenge more success was had by:

  • Chamber Orchestra - 1st Place, Under 24 String Orchestra
  • Senior Brass Ensemble - 2nd Place, Secondary School Ensemble
  • Percussion Ensemble - 2nd Place, Secondary School Mixed Acoustic Ensemble
  • Barker in the Battle of the Choirs (an open televised competition) - 5th place
  • Barker Saxophone Ensemble - 1st place
  • Barker Brass Ensemble - 2nd place
  • Barker Percussion Ensemble - 3rd place, Under 19 Ensemble

VISUAL ARTS

Five student works have been nominated for 2009 ArtExpress:

  • Sarah Jacquet's - "Threads"
  • Hannah Quayle's - "America Hardboiled"
  • Kathryn Short - for her video titled "00:00:00"
  • Jarryd Phillips - for his "Chicago" designed objects BOW
  • Simone Solar's - "The Beauty of Time" series of prints.

Two of these students have had their major work included in ArtExpress:

  • Hannah Quayle’s major work will be on display at Tweed River Art Gallery  from 25 June to 9 August 2009
  • Simon Solar’s major works will be on display at Sydney Olympic Park from 3 March to 26 April 2009.
