Barker College

Junior School

A Junior School boy is recognised by the cheerful smile and sparkling eyes which tell of a curious young learner, full of energy and enthusiasm and an uncomplicated desire to learn and experience everything Barker can offer.

At Barker we believe life is a journey, not a race. We provide a school environment where he is encouraged, challenged and engaged in learning and co-curricular experiences appropriate to boys of his age.

This important time in his life will provide rich and diverse learning opportunities. Day by day he will share these valuable offerings with his mates, sowing the seeds of lifelong friendships, all in a safe and caring environment with teachers walking by his side.

The Junior School philosophy of learning

The Junior School curriculum has been specifically designed for boys! Their particular learning styles benefit from an environment that provides structure in the foundational development of literacy and numeracy. Diversity of teaching and learning strategies engage boys and accommodates different intelligences exemplifying Barker’s understanding of Best Practice in Primary Education.

At Barker we have embraced the sound research based theory of Howard Gardner’s approach to human intelligence with the inherent belief that all humans have abilities across a broad spectrum of areas. Our model of teaching and learning is designed to facilitate this more multi dimensional approach. All students benefit in this environment.

Individual learning rates and abilities are enhanced in a differentiated and integrated curriculum without compromising the all important social and emotional needs which are best served within a parallel class structure. Additional staff in the areas of Learning Support and also Academic Enrichment, work closely with class teachers to support boys exhibiting delayed or advanced learning abilities respectively.

Curriculum and staff

I am delighted to lead of a teaching team of outstanding professionals. The Junior School staff is a desirable blend of youth, energy and experience. The high ratio of male teachers is beneficial to our all boys environment

The Junior School core curriculum is built on the mandatory Key Learning Areas of the Board of Studies.  Classroom teachers have direct responsibility for English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and its Environment.

Specialist Teachers provide a high level of expertise in the additional areas of Christian Studies, Creative and Practical Arts, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Information Technology, Library Services, and Italian
