A fully coeducational school by 2022
Places for girls in Year 3 from 2019
A coeducational school experience provides a safe environment in which young men and women can grow up together, learn to work respectfully, and appreciate the differing viewpoints that each brings. It provides full access to the Barker College experience for all students and their families, promoting harmony and a rich and vibrant academic and co-curricular life for our students.
At Barker we believe life is a journey, not a race. We provide a school environment where your child is encouraged, challenged and engaged in learning and co-curricular experiences appropriate to children of their age.
This important time in their life will provide rich and diverse learning opportunities. Day by day they will share these valuable offerings with their mates, sowing the seeds of lifelong friendships, all in a safe and caring environment with teachers walking by their side.
The Junior School philosophy of learning
The Junior School is a state of the art teaching and learning centre. Its generously sized classrooms, connecting common areas and additional teaching and learning facilities, provide a warm and ambient environment where the learning community interacts and shares a diverse range of daily experiences.
The development of strong foundational skills in literacy and numeracy is paramount to successful learning and this is the cornerstone of our educational programs. Knowledgeable, caring, open-minded, balanced, principled, reflective, communicators, thinkers, risk takers, inquirers. It is these ten attributes of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile that we hope will develop in each of our learners. Each learner will be working towards an understanding about the attributes and how they are an important aspect of their learning journey providing a strong foundation. Our path towards IB Primary Years Program accreditation has begun. We believe that every child should enjoy the benefits of a broad, well rounded co-curricular program that includes creative and performing arts, sport, STEAM, debating and service and leadership development. At Barker we recognise that gifted and talented students have specific intellectual and social emotional needs that require opportunities to be challenged and extended in pace, depth and complexity.
Curriculum and staff
I am delighted to lead a teaching team of outstanding professionals. The Junior School staff is a desirable blend of youth, energy and experience. A good mix of male and female teachers is beneficial to our learning environment.
Please join me on a tour of our Prep and Junior Schools so that we can show you how we inspire our students, every day and in every experience.
