One of the greatest things you can do at Barker is Drama. We have a dynamic department of approachable, specialist  teachers who are passionate about creating, performing and inspiring others.

Our Barker Drama Alumni have studied at such prestigious training institutions as NIDA, WAAPA, VCA and many more. Not to mention the large number now working in the industry in a breadth of different roles.

OnStage

In 2016 16 students from HSC Drama were nominated for selection into OnStage. Some for both their Group Performance and their Individual Performances.

Barker Theatre Co.

Over the years our plays have been a varied collection of styles, themes and theatrical presentations. And the main drive is always the student experience.

Each year group from Year 9 – Year 12 has a dedicated play every year. The incoming director selects the text and auditions usually attract over 50 students per production. It is possible for any student to audition for these plays – you do not need to be taking curriculum Drama to audition. For many students their role in the play whether it is on or off the stage is one of the defining moments of their time at Barker, an experience that lasts forever.

Theatresports

Only recently returned to the Barker stage it is attracting an increasing number of players in years 10 – 12. The students “practice” once a week and compete in the annual inter-school’s competition.

Previous Productions

Barker’s history with plays and school productions date back to 1914; an astonishing record that affirms the important place the performing arts has always had in the life of the school

Facilities & Staff

The R E Kefford Building houses four large teaching studios for Drama classes and two smaller group rehearsal rooms. We have two beautiful theatres, The Rhodes’ Scholars’ Theatre and the BCMA Theatre seating 220 and 140 people respectively. In addition, the recently refurbished Leslie Hall seats 700 and provides the scale for larger productions mostly musicals. The OBA Sound Stage can seat the entire school (on the grass) in its natural amphitheatre, with performances and celebrations happening on the man-made stage.

Barker has five teaching staff and a theatre technician. Each has performance experience and brings a wealth of knowledge from time spent on the stage and in the Performing Arts industry.
